# First Layer Issues/Prints Not Sticking to Bed

Unlike the Makerbots, many open source printers such as the Prusa and Ender 3 allow the model to be directly printed on the build surface instead of a raft. This means that first layer height are usually critical to ensure that prints are well stuck to the bed yet not too close that it would cause elephant foot effect.
