Exhibited: Hamilton Gallery
OFF FORM | OFF MODERN: A Brutalist Archaeology from The Grampians (Gariwerd) The exhibition will unfold through architecture, landscape painting, photography, digital projection and 3-D works, with each section connected through a selection of projects from local architect Graeme Gunn AM (1933-2024). Works from the Hamilton Gallery collection will be presented alongside never seen before digital commissions of The Grampians.
As part of OFF FORM | OFF MODERN, NExT Lab contributed 2 peices of 3D-scanned point cloud animations. 3D scan data was collected from the Grampians through a combination of all the scanning equipment available through NExT Lab; Z+F Terrestrial Scanner, BLK360 Terrestrial Scanner, and drone photogrammetry. The animations were produced using Blender.
Reality Capture allows the combination of Terrestrial Scanning and Photogrammetry, leveraging the geometric realism of terrestrial scanning and the infilling potential and colour accuracy of photogrammetry.
Due to limited time available on site, the equipment was used where most appropriate for the final outcome;
Z+F used for where most detail was required.
BLK360 was used in the peripheral areas.
Drone photogrammetry was used where the scanners could not reach.
When it came to colouring the point cloud, multiple combinations were made from the datasets; photogrammetry only, photogrammetry mixed with Z+F, and Z+F only. The BLK360 colours were discarded as they are the least accurate when compared to the Drone and Z+F. This was done in Reality Capture. Afterwards, we were able to curate the colours by interpolating between the datasets using Cloud Compare.
Animation and rendering produced using Blender. Screened as a 7m long projection.
