Submission and Machine

Have had an ISF consultation at Fablab before the job submission
Rhinoceros 3D software downloaded and installed
ISF template downloaded
No duplicate geometry
Stock dimensions are correctly modeled
All geometry is offset 35mm from the stock edge
All linework is on the correct layer
Name and student ID number in the file
Geometry fits within the ISF template (See ISF Parameters)

At your initial consultation, the Fab Lab Technician will take you through the template and will advise how to set up your file according to the guidelines.

File Preparation:

Hint: Always ensure that you have the latest template file; we periodically make revisions and additions.

ISF Template for Submission

Model your stock in the Stock Layer

Change the ISF model layer to "3 Axis - Part "

Change the ISF model boundary line to "3 Axis - Containment Regions"

Draw any secondary pattern lines and change the layer to "3 Axis - Engraving"

ISF Support Template

Set up a new sheet as a normal 2D CNC cut. Model this in the same ISF Template.

Model a new stock: a 9mm MDF sheet.

Draw the profile cuts:

Outside profile: 100mm minimum distance to the ISF 3D PART boundary edge. Change the layer to: "2 Axis - Profile - External - Depth 9.00mm"

Inside profile: 30 the ISF 3D PART boundary edge. Change the layer to: "2 Axis - Profile - Internal - Depth 9.00mm"

Fixing hole locations (10mm diameter, 9mm depth): 1: Outside edge hole locations: 250 mm distance between each hole and 10mm distance to the stock edge line. 2: Inside edge hole locations: 200mm distance between each hole and 10mm distance from the "Inside profile". Change the layer for all holes to "2 Axis - Hole Pocketing - Diameter 10.00mm - Depth 9.00mm" layer.

$2.00 per minute + material costs

We charge a small fee to cover use to the CNC facilities at the Fab Lab.

This cost covers the:

File Set-up - $1/min
Cutting Time - $0.50/min
Material Cost - $/area of sheet used (refer to the website for the aluminum sheet availability and cost)

CNC milling jobs can often take hours to complete and are charged on time (plus material if sourced from the Fab Lab). It is important students are aware of this, so they can budget accordingly.
