# 3D Scanning

## 3D Scanning (Object)

3D scanning is a technology that captures a physical object’s exact size, shape and surface texture and creates a digital 3-dimensional representation, or digital 3D model. These scanners provide an intuitive workflow, similar to taking a video.

**Applications:** The Artec 3D scanner creates a high definition 3D model of real life objects in full colour. The scanner is best used when documenting objects or models that are difficult to model in 3D software, or where like-for-like replication of the object is needed. This scanned object is then able to be used in 3D software for manipulation or can be 3D printed.

## **3D Lidar Scanning (Environment)**

LiDAR is typically used in surveying however is becoming more accessible and useful for small applications such as room scanning. The scan method measures the distance to a target using and infrared laser and measuring the reflected light with a sensor. The return time and wavelengths can be used to construct a 3D representation of a space or object (commonly known as a point-cloud).

**Applications:** Use a scanner to quickly reproduce a surrounding or environment in digital format. This can be used to create measured drawings, survey documents or virtual environment scenes and other creative possibilities still to be explored.
